About the Scottish Thistle:
One legend surrounding the Scottish Thistle places invading Vikings under the command of the Norse king Haakon at the forefront of the Thistle’s locus in history. According to this legend, Haakon landed at the shore of a Scottish village in the cover of darkness. Leading his men silently through the fields to raid, they encountered an outgrowth of thistles. Unprepared for the tenacious and painful barbed stems, Haakon’s men quickly gave themselves away with their cries of pain. The Scottish villagers rallied to meet their foe, and the raid ended before it could begin.
